Sofa Buying Guide
There’s a lot to consider when buying a sofa. Where will it be placed? How many people will be using it on a daily basis? What size will your sofa need to be? What material will suit your needs and style?
As every G Plan sofa is crafted and designed to last, we want to ensure you select the perfect sofa for you. We hope this guide will enable you to make a considered choice. When you visit our specialist stockists, their staff will also be able to help you with your decision.
One of the first things you will need to consider before buying a sofa is the size of your living room. You don’t want your sofa to overpower your existing furniture and accessories, or to look lost in a larger room.
If you have a small space, you may wish to think about a small two seater, such as our Mistral sofa or one of our more compact sofa styles such as Turner. If you have a larger room, you could make a dramatic statement with a generous sofa like Washington.
You may also need to consider how you will fit the sofa into your home or living room. How wide are your hallways or staircases? Will the sofa fit through your living room door? It is a good idea to measure your door frames and hall before purchasing your sofa. Consult your local stockist for further information.
All of our collections have been measured to help you, and you’ll find the dimensions next to each sofa and armchair on this website
To ensure your choice of sofa fits perfectly, our Mistral range offers an alternative to standard size sofa and chair options. We’ve subtly adjusted the height and width to create a compact sofa or chair with the same comfort and support. Our smaller size models are identical in styling, so they can easily be combined with other items in the range. They make a perfect choice for those with a smaller frame, or for a more compact room. Chloe and Mistral are also available with compact size options.
Every single G Plan sofa is made to order, which means you can specify your personal choice of fabrics and leathers from a wide range to ensure they integrate wonderfully with your home and personality. Visit the G Plan blog for styling tips and inspiration on how to make a comfortable home.
When making a long term investment, you need a sofa that will meet your needs for years to come. Consider the function of your sofa before deciding on the size and fabric choices. How many people will be sitting on your sofa? Do you entertain often? Do you have young children or grandchildren, and if so do you need a sofa that’s easier to clean?
If you entertain or have your family over often, you may prefer a larger sofa. If you have young children or eat your dinner on your sofa, a darker fabric may be more practical. Or perhaps you would prefer a leather sofa that you can wipe clean? G Plan ranges come in a variety of leathers and fabrics that are chosen for their durability as well as their comfort, so you can relax and enjoy your sofa – whatever your lifestyle.
A sofa is one piece of furniture that will be used almost every day. So choosing one that will stand the test of time is important.
All G Plan sofas are made by skilled workers in the UK who use the best materials to create quality upholstery. We use hardwood from responsible sources on all load-bearing areas and quality springs for long-term durability. We also guarantee our sofa frames and springs for 10 years.
Having a beautiful sofa that perfectly complements your decor is important, but it should also offer you the ultimate in comfort. You should consider your height and leg length, how firm or soft you would like your cushions to be and whether you want to sit straight or relax and curl up on your sofa.
At G Plan, we understand that people come in all shapes and sizes, so we offer a range of sofas with different fillings and posture characteristics. Make sure you visit a retailer to experience the sofas for yourself. Don’t be shy about taking off your shoes, putting your feet up and recreating the way you would use your sofa at home.
How much support do you need in your sofa? If you’re after support for your head and neck, we recommend lumbar support or a high backed model. Many of our models also offer a split seat back for lower back comfort and some sofas are even available with different arm heights like the Mistral.
For an added touch of luxury, we offer recliner sofas and armchairs that support you in a variety of positions, for maximum comfort.
Fabrics and leathers
Last but not least, you will need to decide on a fabric to complete the look. Would you prefer a leather sofa or a fabric sofa? If you have children, would a darker colour be more practical? Or would you like the luxury of chenille which is beautifully soft to touch? G Plan offers a wide range of soft fabric choices to suit your home. Each is rigorously checked and carefully chosen for its soft touch and durability.
If you are looking for a leather sofa, you should seek quality leather that will wear well. We ensure that all our leathers are comfortable, easy to live with and timeless, sourced from some of the finest tanneries in the world. You can also choose from 37 colours and six types of leather finish.
Why not request a fabric or leather swatch online for free, or flick through our full swatch book in store, so you can feel and see the difference for yourself.
How much time do you have to care for your sofa? It’s worth considering how often you will need to plump the cushions or treat the leather. For example our fibre filled models offer exceptional comfort but do require more frequent plumping than foam-filled cushions. Our SnugSit seat cushions are designed to have a soft and inviting look and we recommend that these are dressed regularly to keep them looking their best.
