Dulux Colour Of the Year: The Rhythm of Blues

Dulux have been predicting colour trends accurately for years, so when they announce their Colour of the Year, you can trust that it will be all over interior trends in the months to follow. For the first time, Dulux have featured a trio of colours rather than a singular one. The Rhythm of Blues features three shades that each encapsulate a calming, indigo fluidity, while still being vastly different. Blue is undisputably one of the world’s most beloved colours, and whilst it has had its moments of popularity, it has fallen out of interior trends over the past few years. Many people are opting to play around with colours on the warm side of the spectrum, but The Rhythm of Blues could signify a colour turning point.

Three paint cans with diffent shades of blue

The Rhythm of Blues colour story is all about fluidity, freedom and relief. Who doesn’t need a bit of that! We live in a fast-paced world, full of tension and stress, so it’s more important than ever to prioritise adding peace to your home. Blue has even been proven to make your brain calmer. Though colour can be deeply personal, for most people, blue decreases brain activity and stimulation. It’s serenity science! Let’s delve into each of the trio of colours and explore how they can be styled.

Open plan living room painting in three shades of blue to showcase the Dulux Colour of the Year 2026

Mellow Flow is the lightest of the 3 Indigo-toned shades. With grey undertones and a powdery appearance, this colour feels fresh on any wall it’s painted on. It really is peace in a paint. We love this shade for any area of your home where you go to focus. Think home office or reading nook, the tranquillity this colour brings is perfect. Pair with a near white shade like Dulux’s Clouded Pearl 3, for a softer space. Or, go bold with a punchy orange like Nigerian Sands 5. Our Liso Tide Fabric is a close match to Mellow Flow, along with our Cambridge Sky Leather, both featuring similar grey, powdery hues.

The brightest of the bunch is Free Groove. A vibrant, energetic, electric sort of blue. If you’re of the maximalist persuasion and love to be uplifted by colour, this paint might be the one for you. We love the idea of using this paint for a fun feature wall, or even get creative by painting other features of your space with Free Groove, instead of a wall. Doors, shelves and skirting boards can make for a fun accent when coated with a paint like Free Groove. Pair an accent wall with Dulux’s Subtle Ivory 1 for a gentle look, or go bold with a purple shade like Velvet Ribbon. Our Grano Mulberry Fabric is the perfect way to get the Free Groove look incorporated on your soft furnishings, too.

Slow Swing is a dramatic, velvety navy shade. Like Mellow Flow, this shade also has grey undertones, but on the opposite end of the light spectrum. If sultry interiors are your thing, Slow Swing could be the shade for you. Slow Swing is the ideal paint for colour drenching, its calming, luxurious colour will make a room feel as though it’s cradling you in a soft, mellow warmth. We think that this paint is the perfect lounge shade for anyone who’s a fan of dark interiors, it’s especially great for the winter season too. Pair Slow Swing with our Plush Indigo Fabric or our Cambridge Navy Leather for a gorgeously trendy Sofa.
