Oh, Christmas Tree! Oh, Christmas Tree!
Using the same decorations on the tree each Christmas does bring a sense of nostalgia to this time of year, but sometimes, it’s nice to break tradition and try something new. We’ve had a look at some tree schemes that can complement your existing living room scheme and still evoke the spirit of the season.
A crafty Christmas
There’s something romantic about having a homemade Christmas theme. Taking the time to put together your own decorations feels really personal and means you can put your own stamp on them. There are so many things you can do for a crafty Christmas. Create your own snowflake garlands to hang, make your own angel to sit atop the tree and of course – making your own hanging decorations. A nice touch is giving each member of the family a clear bauble, ask them to write down their favourite memories and moments from the year on brown parchment, roll them up and put them inside. In a few years you can go back, open them up and remember the year you shared.
Perhaps this year you would like to try a more grown up theme, monochrome is low key, and when executed well, can be truly beautiful. You can create a visually interesting look by using different patterns such as houndstooth, stripes and polka dots, which all go wonderfully when in the same colour palette. Black and white gingham ribbons, tied in bows, sit well on branches and make a change from baubles. Stay clear of black and white tinsel, as it can be overpowering, but make sure you adorn your tree with plenty of white fairy lights.
White and gold are traditional colours for this time of year, and when used together they add a touch of luxe and lustre to your Christmas. String gold beads loosely across branches, place a gold star on top and add pine cones sprayed white for a traditional touch. This theme lends itself to more traditional tree ornaments, wooden figures such as angels, nutcrackers and toy soldiers will bring a sense of nostalgia to your tree, but still look classy.
