Top Tips for Decorating Your Table This Christmas
As we welcome in December, our thoughts are on seasonal entertaining, and preparing our homes for the extra visitors over Christmas. In this blog, we’re focusing on the festive details which will add a sparkle to your dining table. Your guests won’t just be talking about the perfectly cooked turkey or those homemade mince pies this year, as your table décor will be a feast for the eyes…
This year, we’ve spotted a move away from tailored and traditional schemes when decorating for Christmas. Greens and reds have come to be expected, so how about surprising your guests with an alternative colour palette? For a tied together look, pick out hues from your current décor and reflect them in your decorations. There are loads of lovely tableware and textiles to choose from this season so it’s easy to set up a stylish dining table in any shade. The more the merrier definitely applies when hosting over the holidays, so keep the look relaxed and eclectic. We love the soft rosy hues in this gorgeous set up which brings a little winter wonderland magic to the dining room.
Wintery blooms and foliage will add a flourish to your dinner table. The usual rules of floristry apply, make sure you cut stems before putting them in water to help them last right through the festive period. Cut flowers to different lengths to make sure they’re evenly spread out in your vase. A bold display of flowers can make a great centrepiece, but if you’re keen to get creative you could try making wreaths for chair backs or decorating napkin rings with fresh sprigs.
Accessories and Accents
Add some sparkle to your table with some eye catching accessories. Glass, mirrored and metallic ornaments are all on trend and help to reflect light around the room for a festive glow. For a glamorous feel opt for statement candelabras and opulent glassware. For a simple centerpiece, fill a mason jar with fairy lights, gilded pinecones or water and floating tea lights. Evocative candlelight is perfect for this time of year so place candles along the full length of the table for a magical Christmas ambience. Scatter vintage ornaments and glass baubles in between place settings to add a unique touch. Finally, don’t forget to look up… hanging greenery and decorations from your lighting or hooks on the ceiling makes for an exciting visual display.
Personalised place settings are a lovely touch for dinner time. If everyone in your family has a special spot at your dining table, how about handwritten name cards or placemats? We love Paperchase for stationary and craft supplies and they’ve got some beautiful plain cards which you can decorate yourself. Some simple napkin folding and carefully placed mini decorations can be very effective and adds a fun twist to table laying for your little helpers! Table games and icebreakers are a must to keep visitors entertained between courses and can be picked up from places that sell stocking fillers.
We hope we’ve inspired you to get creative with your table decorations this year ready for a delicious feast with family and friends. No matter what you’re serving up, with a few special touches your dinner table will be the talk of the town this Christmas!
