As we reluctantly wave goodbye to the summer, we’re starting to prepare for the colder months ahead. One of our favourite ways to celebrate the start of Autumn is making delicious preserves. If you’re new to preserving, this blog gives inspiration on what to make and where to get started…
Get the whole family together, head outdoors and pick your own fruit for jams and jellies. September is the best time to pick blackberries, and if you’ve picked strawberries and raspberries earlier in the summer, now is the time to defrost them ready for cooking!
Jams, marmalades and chutneys are easy to make yourself once you get the hang of it. First time? Treat yourself to a recipe book. We love this one from Lakeland, full of delicious ideas and helpful tips!
Getting yourself set up with the right equipment is also important; make sure you have a large heavy-based pan, a wooden spoon and a handful of jars. We’ve spotted this great 8 litre preserving pan in a stylish red enamel (perfect for preparing big batches) and we love the selection of glass jars available from Kilner (link), perfect for storing your homemade goodies.
Homemade preserves make perfect gifts for friends and family so be sure to label up your creations. These beautiful stickers (link) are from Lakeland and will make your tasty treats stand out from the crowd, just add a colourful ribbon or string for a finishing flourish!
We hope we’ve inspired you to get creative in the kitchen! Once you’ve mastered a few recipes, feel free to tweak them, adding your own favourite ingredients. Enjoy eating the fruits of your labour this Autumn and if you’re happy to share, impress your friends with the perfect homemade gift for Christmas!
