Host Your Own Mini Olympics This Summer
Host your own Mini Olympics in the garden and keep the kids active, outdoors and entertained this summer!
The Opening Ceremony
Get the whole family involved in the decorating and make plenty of flags and bunting to put up in the garden. Children will enjoy getting crafty and it will also help your little ones learn about the different countries of the world. You could even divide everyone in to teams and create fun costumes to help identify which country they will be representing using different coloured t-shirts or hats. As this year’s Olympics are in Rio, think about incorporating a fun Brazilian carnival theme with your decorations and food!
This is where the real fun begins; time to decide on your games! Be inspired by the real Olympics – try relay races, long jump, tennis and badminton or sports day favourites including beanbag throwing, hoola hooping, sack races, skipping, three-legged races, wheelbarrow races and obstacle courses! On hot days include water sports involving water guns, water balloons and paddling pools.
Get crafty and make your own medals using shiny materials like foil, glitter and ribbons. Be sure to make enough for all of your competitors – you could even put them into goodie bags for people to take home so that everyone is a winner! For your awards ceremony, you could make trophies and bunches of paper flowers for runners up, then set up some podiums for your teams to pose on for photographs!
Don’t Forget The Refreshments!
No Mini Olympics is complete without some tasty refreshments. It’s essential to provide your little athletes with lots of drinks and healthy snacks to keep them going. We love BBC Good Food’s delicious Healthy Flapjacks and Delias Summer Crudites with Three Dips perfect for outdoor snacking on your event day!
We hope we’ve inspired you to host your own Mini Olympics – enjoy the sunshine, sport and family time this summer!
