Catwalk to Interiors – The Deep Sea Trend
Watery hues and fluid fabrics have caught our attention on the Spring Summer Catwalks this year, so here at G Plan HQ we’ve been thinking about how we can make the most of the trend and bring the deepest darkest depths of the oceans into our homes too. This look is a move on from the coastal theme, bringing a richer, more dramatic atmosphere to your interior.
Unsurprisingly, the key colour for embracing the deep sea trend is blue. Blue is a popular choice for interiors because of its diverse palette – there is a shade for all tastes and types of property which means you can introduce this scheme to varying degrees depending on your preferences. This versatile colour can also be used to make a small room feel bigger, so it would suit a smaller living room, study or reading nook. Select tonal hues for furniture, walls and soft furnishings to add depth of colour.
Teal is bang on trend and can be cool and experimental, and calm and serene at the same time, perfect for a deep sea inspired sanctuary. Try a statement armchair or 2 seater sofa in a fabric such as Checkers Teal. If you prefer something darker, inky tones can give a rich and moody atmosphere. Choosing a chenille fabric on your sofa, such as Naples Denim will also add a tactile element and give depth. If you really want to make an impact, opt for a braver, bolder colour such as Aqua.
There are a number of options for accessorising this scheme. Try pops of colour in red and coral shades which will draw the eye around the room. These colours work particularly well against a teal backdrop and will instantly add interest and an element of fun. Think starfish, seaweed, mermaids and coral reefs in the form of deep sea objet d’art or reflect the themes in the colours and patterns you choose for curtains, rugs and scatter cushions. Mix up designs and prints including waves, ripples and chevron patterns, but select from the same tonal palette to keep harmony within the space.
For an ethereal mood introduce some phosphorescent sparkle and shimmering silver pearl into your room. Mix and match iridescent vases in textures resembling water including ocean spray and water droplets. Beautifully shaped glassware in sea blue and green tones will also add to this underwater fantasy theme and will glisten and reflect light around the room, giving a darker backdrop an instant lift.
The deep sea trend has taken the runways by storm, and it’s a perfect scheme for adding life and depth to your interior. Whatever your take on the theme, be it a statement teal backdrop with coral accents, or a rich and moody foundation full of ethereal treasures, make the most out of texture and shape in your sanctuary. Soothing and serene or dramatic, moody and mysterious, this scheme is perfect for creating a room to unwind in.
